Applied Cryptography groups the computing pioneers in this atlas whose central, explicitly stated contribution is the design, cryptanalysis, or practical deployment of cryptographic algorithms and protocols that secure real computer systems and communications. Members range from the inventors of public key cryptography and the RSA, ElGamal, and Diffie-Hellman schemes, through cryptanalysts who broke block ciphers and hash functions, to researchers who built the provable security foundations, authenticated key exchange methods, zero knowledge proofs, and homomorphic encryption schemes now used across banking, communications, and computing infrastructure. The group covers Cryptography as a subarea of the ACM Computing Classification System's Security and Privacy area, distinct from this atlas's separate Theory of Computation pioneer group Cryptography and Cryptanalysis, which classifies cryptography as a branch of computational theory rather than as security engineering practice.
