John David McAfee was a British and American computer programmer and businessman, born on 18 September 1945 and died on 23 June 2021. In 1987 he wrote the first commercial anti-virus software and founded McAfee Associates to sell it. He resigned in 1994 and sold his remaining stake, and in later years he became a vocal critic of the company and disavowed its continued use of his name. He afterwards founded other companies, including Tribal Voice, which made the PowWow chat program, QuorumEx and Future Tense Central, and held leadership positions at Everykey, MGT Capital Investments and Luxcore. He also sought the Libertarian Party nomination for United States president in 2016 and 2020 and spoke for privacy and cryptocurrency.
