Andrei Petrovich Ershov (April 19, 1931 to December 8, 1988) was a Soviet computer scientist who helped found the discipline of informatics education in the USSR. He created the ALPHA programming language and, later, the Rapira language, and Donald Knuth credited him with independently discovering the technique of hashing with linear probing. Working from 1959 at the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences, he helped establish the Novosibirsk Computer Center and the Siberian School of Computer Science, developed the AIST-0 time sharing system regarded as the Soviet Union's first, and later initiated the Computer Bank of the Russian Language, a project to build a Russian language text corpus comparable to contemporary English language databases.
