Andrey Ershov

Andrey Ershov was a Soviet computer scientist who helped establish the Novosibirsk Computer Center and the Siberian school of computer science at the Siberian division of the Academy of Sciences from 1959 onward. He created the ALPHA and Rapira programming languages, built the first Soviet time sharing system, called AIST-0, and, as Donald Knuth later credited, independently co-discovered the hashing with linear probing technique used in computer science for fast data lookup. He also represented Soviet computing internationally through the IFIP working group that maintained the ALGOL 60 and ALGOL 68 language standards.
