Ivar Jacobson is a Swedish computer scientist and software engineer who invented use cases in 1986, a way of specifying what a software system should do by describing the interactions between the system and the people or other systems that use it. At Rational Software he worked alongside Grady Booch and James Rumbaugh as one of the original developers of the Unified Modeling Language, and he separately developed Objectory, an object oriented software engineering method that became the commercial basis of the Rational Unified Process.
