Philip Wadler is a UK-based American computer scientist known for his contributions to programming language design and type theory. He holds the Personal Chair of theoretical computer science at the University of Edinburgh, and his major contributions include work on functional programming theory and monads and on the design of the Haskell and XQuery languages; he also created the Orwell programming language in 1984 and helped add generic types to Java 5.
