Jane Hillston

Jane Elizabeth Hillston (born 1963) is a British computer scientist and professor of quantitative modelling in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, where she has spent her academic career since completing a PhD in computer science there in 1994. She is known for her work on stochastic process algebras, developing modelling and analysis techniques used to understand and predict the behavior of dynamic computing systems, and her PhD thesis on the subject won the BCS and Conference of Professors and Heads of Computing Distinguished Dissertation award in 1995 before its later publication by Cambridge University Press. She was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, received the Roger Needham Award in 2005, the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Lord Kelvin Medal in 2021, and the BCS Lovelace Medal for computer science research in 2023, and was appointed MBE in 2023.
