Mark N. Wegman

Mark N. Wegman is an American computer scientist known for his contributions to algorithms and compiler optimization. He earned a bachelor's degree from New York University and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and joined IBM Research in 1975, where he later served as head of computer science. He is best known as one of the inventors of static single assignment form, a technique used in modern optimizing compilers, and also contributed to universal hashing and the LZMW data compression algorithm. He was elected an ACM Fellow in 1996, is an IEEE Fellow, was named an IBM Fellow in 2007, and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2010. He received the ACM SIGPLAN Programming Languages Achievement Award in 2006.
