This group gathers pioneers of software and its engineering whose primary contribution was software for computing across multiple machines at once, including virtualization and hypervisor technology, distributed operating system research, and the concurrent and parallel programming techniques that coordinate work across processors and machines. It follows the Distributed Systems second-level heading of the ACM Computing Classification System under Software and its engineering. Their shared work is coordinating computation and resources across more than one machine, as distinct from a single machine operating system, a language or a development tool.
