Bruce Wesley Arden was an American computer scientist who began his computing career in 1950 programming IBM's hybrid Card Programmed Computer/Calculator, then became a research associate and later associate director of the University of Michigan's Computing Center. While at Michigan he co-authored the GAT compiler for the IBM 650 and the MAD compiler for the IBM 704/709/7090, took part in the design negotiations with IBM over the virtual memory features later built into the IBM System/360 Model 67, and contributed to the initial design of the Michigan Terminal System time sharing operating system. He went on to chair computer science departments at Michigan and Princeton University and later served as dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Rochester.
