David Harel

Software And Its Engineering

David Harel (born April 12, 1950, in London) is an Israeli and British computer scientist who holds the William Sussman Professorial Chair of Mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science, where he has been on the faculty since 1980 and later served as dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. In the 1980s he invented statecharts, a graphical language for specifying the behavior of reactive systems that was later adopted into the UML standard, and in the late 1990s he co-invented live sequence charts with Werner Damm. Harel has also written on computability, dynamic logic and database theory, and he served as president of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
