Jean E. Sammet was an American computer scientist who served on the committee that designed the COBOL programming language in 1959, one of the earliest widely used business-oriented programming languages. She went on to write some of the first comprehensive surveys and histories of programming languages as a field, and in 1974 she became the first woman to serve as president of the Association for Computing Machinery.
