John McKinley Chambers (born April 28, 1941) is the creator of the S programming language and a core member of the R programming language project. He worked at Bell Labs from 1966 to 2005 and has been affiliated with Stanford University since 2008. For his work on S he received the 1998 ACM Software System Award. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and received an honorary Doctor of Mathematics degree from the University of Waterloo in 2004.
