Kateryna Yushchenko

Kateryna Lohvynivna Yushchenko, born Rvacheva, was a Ukrainian computer and information science researcher, born in Chyhyryn in 1919. In 1955 she developed the Address programming language, one of the world's first high-level languages to support indirect addressing, an idea that anticipated the pointer constructs of later programming languages. She became the first woman in the Soviet Union to earn a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences degree in programming, directed the Institute of Computer Science of the Ukrainian SSR Academy of Sciences from 1957, and supervised forty seven doctoral students over her career. She died in 2001. She is not the same person as the later, unrelated Kateryna Yushchenko who served as First Lady of Ukraine from 2005 to 2010.
