Martin Odersky is a German computer scientist and professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne who created the Scala programming language, first released in 2004, which combines object oriented and functional programming on the Java virtual machine. Before Scala he built the GJ compiler in 1997, adding generics to Java in a design that became the basis of javac, the standard Java compiler.
