Barry Boehm was an American software engineer and professor at the University of Southern California who created the Constructive Cost Model, known as COCOMO, a widely used mathematical method for estimating software development effort from a projects expected size, described in his 1981 book Software Engineering Economics. He also proposed the spiral model of software development, an iterative process in which a project repeatedly cycles through planning, risk analysis, engineering and evaluation phases, an approach that influenced later iterative and agile methods.
