Oliver Standingford was a senior manager at the British catering firm J. Lyons and Co. who, together with colleague Raymond Thompson, was sent to the United States in 1947 to study new business methods developed there during the war. A meeting with one of the developers of the ENIAC computer led the two men to see the potential of computers for administering a large business, and their resulting report set in motion the project that built the LEO computer, the first machine used for commercial data processing.
