Ian Robert Horrocks (born March 11, 1958, in Liverpool) is a professor of computer science at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Oriel College, known for his work on description logic and the Web Ontology Language. His research covers knowledge representation and reasoning, particularly ontology languages, description logic and optimized tableaux decision procedures, and he authored the OIL, DAML+OIL and OWL ontology language standards, chairing the World Wide Web Consortium working group that standardized OWL 2. His 1997 doctoral thesis was titled Optimising Tableaux Decision Procedures for Description Logics, and he received the Roger Needham Award in 2005 and the BCS Lovelace Medal in 2020.
