Brian K. Reid

Brian Keith Reid (born 1949) is an American computer scientist known for developing Scribe, an early document markup language described in his 1980 doctoral dissertation, and for pioneering internet firewall technology, including the Gatekeeper system he co-developed with Paul Vixie. He created early infrastructure for Usenet, including its alt.* hierarchy, and produced widely cited maps of Usenet traffic flow from 1986 to 1995. He held academic positions at Stanford and worked at Digital Equipment Corporation, where he led the Network Systems Laboratory, later serving as Director of Operations at Google from 2002 to 2004. He received the ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award in 1982 for his work on Scribe.
