Daniel Paul Friedman is professor emeritus of computer science at Indiana University in Bloomington, whose research focuses on programming languages. With David Wise he wrote an influential 1976 paper on lazy streams that helped open exploration of programming with potentially infinite data structures, and in the 1980s he turned to the Scheme programming language, exploring macros for defining programming languages; with Eugene Kohlbecker, Matthias Felleisen and Bruce Duba he co-introduced the concept of hygienic macros in a widely cited 1986 paper, and with Christopher T. Haynes and Mitchell Wand he studied the nature and uses of continuation objects.
