This group gathers pioneers of software and its engineering whose primary contribution was a method, model or discipline for planning, structuring and managing how software is built, including structured analysis and design, object oriented analysis and design, the Unified Modeling Language, agile and extreme programming, the Capability Maturity Model, cost estimation models such as COCOMO, and empirical studies of software quality and process. It follows the Software Engineering second-level heading of the ACM Computing Classification System under Software and its engineering. Their shared work is the process and organization of software development itself, as distinct from a specific language, compiler or tool.
