Fernando Perez is a Colombian-born physicist and computer scientist, born in Medellin, who created the IPython interactive computing environment and went on to co-found Project Jupyter, which grew out of IPython in 2014. He is an associate professor in the Statistics Department at the University of California, Berkeley, where he moved in 2008, and he directs the Berkeley Institute for Data Science. Perez received the Free Software Foundation's 2012 Free Software Award for IPython, the 2017 ACM Software System Award for Project Jupyter, and a 2023 NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal.
