Charles Colbourn

Theory of Computation

Charles Joseph Colbourn, born on 24 October 1953 in Toronto, Ontario, is a Canadian computer scientist and mathematician whose research concerns graph algorithms, combinatorial designs and their applications. He studied at the University of Toronto, graduating in 1976, took a master's degree at the University of Waterloo, and received his PhD at Toronto in 1980 under Derek Corneil. He has held faculty positions at the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Waterloo, the University of Vermont, where he was Dorothean Professor of Computer Science from 1996 to 2001, and Arizona State University, where he has been professor of Computer Science and Engineering since then, and he retains his Canadian citizenship despite working in the United States since 1996. He has been one of three editors-in-chief of the Journal of Combinatorial Designs since 1992, and in 2004 the Institute of Combinatorics and its Applications awarded him its Euler Medal for lifetime achievements in combinatorics.
