Der-Tsai Lee

Der-Tsai Lee (born 1949 in Taiwan) is a Taiwanese computer scientist known for his work in computational geometry. He earned a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University in 1971 and a master's degree in 1976 and PhD in 1978 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the latter supervised by Franco Preparata. He taught at Northwestern University for two decades before becoming, in 1998, a distinguished research fellow at the Institute of Information Science of Academia Sinica in Taipei, serving as the institute's director from 1998 to 2008. He later served as president of National Chung Hsing University from 2011 to 2015, on the advisory committee of Taiwan's National Security Council from 2016 to 2020, and as chairman of the Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan from 2020. His research spans the design and analysis of algorithms, computational geometry, VLSI layout, web based computing and bioinformatics; he was elected an Academician of Academia Sinica in 2004, holds fellowships from IEEE (1992) and ACM (1997), and received the Humboldt Research Award in 2007.
