Esko Juhani Ukkonen, born in 1950 in Savonlinna, Finland, is a Finnish theoretical computer scientist known for his contributions to string algorithms, particularly Ukkonen's algorithm for constructing suffix trees. He is professor emeritus at the University of Helsinki, was named a First Class Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland in 2000, is a member of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, and has served as editor-in-chief of the Nordic Journal of Computing since 1993.
