Ileana Streinu

Theory of Computation

Ileana Streinu is a Romanian-American computer scientist and mathematician, the Charles N. Clark Professor of Computer Science and Mathematics at Smith College in Massachusetts, known for her research in computational geometry and in particular for her work on kinematics and structural rigidity. She studied at the University of Bucharest and earned two doctorates in 1994, one in mathematics and computer science at Bucharest under Solomon Marcus and one in computer science at Rutgers University under William L. Steiger, and she joined Smith in 1994. In 2006 she won the Grigore Moisil Award of the Romanian Academy for work with Ciprian Borcea using complex algebraic geometry to bound the number of embeddings of minimally rigid graphs in the Euclidean plane, in 2010 the David P. Robbins Prize of the American Mathematical Society for her combinatorial solution to the carpenter's rule problem using pointed pseudotriangulations, and in 2012 she became a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society.
