Jaroslaw (Jarek) Duda is a Polish computer scientist and assistant professor at the Institute of Computer Science and Computational Mathematics of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, known as the inventor of asymmetric numeral systems, a family of entropy encoding methods that combine the compression effectiveness of arithmetic coding with the execution speed of Huffman coding. Introduced in a 2009 paper, asymmetric numeral systems have been used in data compression across the software industry since 2014 for their improved performance over earlier entropy coding methods.
