Jurg Nievergelt (1938 to October 2019) was a Swiss computer scientist. He graduated from ETH Zurich's mathematics department in 1962 with a thesis on game theory, then earned a PhD in mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1965, remaining there as a computer science faculty member from assistant to full professor until 1977. He became a full professor of computer science at ETH Zurich in 1975, serving until his 2003 retirement, with a 1985 to 1989 leave as Kenan Professor and chairman of the computer science department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Alongside Niklaus Wirth, Carl August Zehnder and Peter Lauchli, he founded ETH's Division of Computer Science in 1981. He is known for contributions to data structures, including trees, extendible hashing and the grid file, and for software for computational geometry such as GeoBench, work recognized in 1995 for its influential contributions to the field.
