Luca Trevisan (21 July 1971 to 19 June 2024) was an Italian theoretical computer scientist, born in Rome and later a professor at Bocconi University in Milan, where he also died. He studied at La Sapienza in Rome, where Pierluigi Crescenzi supervised his doctorate, and then did postdoctoral work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and DIMACS. He held an assistant professor position at Columbia University before moving to the University of California, Berkeley, and then, in 2010, to Stanford; he returned to Berkeley in 2014 and moved to the Department of Decision Sciences at Bocconi in 2019. His research dealt with randomness, cryptography, probabilistically checkable proofs, approximation, property testing, spectral graph theory and sublinear algorithms, and he also ran a blog, in theory, about theoretical computer science.
