Karlheinz Brandenburg is a German electrical engineer widely credited as a principal inventor of the MP3 digital audio compression format, developed through the 1980s and 1990s at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits in Erlangen. MP3 used perceptual audio coding to shrink music files to a fraction of their original size with little audible loss of quality, and it became the dominant format that enabled the rise of digital music distribution and portable music players.
