Shmuel Winograd

Shmuel Winograd (January 4, 1936 to March 25, 2019) was an Israeli-American computer scientist noted for his contributions to computational complexity. He proved several major results on the computational aspects of arithmetic; his contributions include the Coppersmith-Winograd algorithm and a fast Fourier transform algorithm that transforms the FFT into a problem of computing convolutions solvable by another algorithm of his. He studied electrical engineering at MIT, receiving his BS and MS in 1959, and received his PhD from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University in 1968. He joined the research staff at IBM in 1961, later serving as director of its Mathematical Sciences Department from 1970 to 1974 and again from 1980 to 1994.
