Cryptography and Cryptanalysis

This group gathers pioneers of theory of computation whose primary contribution was cryptography and cryptanalysis, including public-key cryptography, digital signatures, secret sharing, zero-knowledge proofs, pseudorandom number generation, hash functions and block ciphers, and the historical codebreaking work at sites such as Bletchley Park that founded the field. It follows the Cryptography second-level heading of the ACM Computing Classification System under Theory of Computation. Their shared work is securing or breaking the security of information through mathematical and computational means, as distinct from computational complexity theory more broadly or general algorithm design. Named "Cryptography and Cryptanalysis" rather than the report own proposed "Cryptography" because computing already carries a live field entity of that exact name.

In symmetric systems, the only ones known until the 1970s, the same secret key encrypts and decrypts a message.
