Ignacio Cirac (born 1965) is a Spanish physicist and director at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, regarded as one of the pioneers of quantum computing and quantum information theory. Working with Peter Zoller, he proposed the Cirac-Zoller controlled-NOT gate in 1995, the first experimentally realistic scheme for building a universal quantum computer using trapped ions, opening the way to real laboratory quantum computation. His subsequent research has extended into quantum network models, entangled W states, and tensor network states used to describe complex quantum systems.
