Madhu Sudan

Theory of Computation

Madhu Sudan is an Indian-American computer scientist and professor at Harvard University known for foundational work on probabilistically checkable proofs, a way of recasting a mathematical proof so that a verifier can check its validity by examining only a small, randomly chosen part of it, and for developing list decoding algorithms for error correcting codes that recover more information from noisy or garbled data than earlier methods allowed. His work earned him the 2001 Godel Prize, the 2002 Rolf Nevanlinna Prize and the 2022 IEEE Richard W. Hamming Medal.
