Martin Casado (born around 1976 in Cartagena, Spain) is a computer scientist and entrepreneur known as a pioneer of software-defined networking. As a PhD student at Stanford, under advisors Nick McKeown, Scott Shenker and Dan Boneh, he began developing OpenFlow, an open protocol enabling software-defined networking, publishing his thesis Architectural Support for Security Management in Enterprise Networks in 2008. In 2007 he co-founded Nicira Networks with McKeown and Shenker to build network virtualization software; VMware acquired Nicira for 1.26 billion dollars in 2012, and Casado went on to lead VMware's Networking and Security Business Unit before becoming a general partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz.
