Arto Kustaa Salomaa (1934-2025) was a Finnish mathematician and computer scientist whose research career of more than forty years focused on formal languages and automata theory. Based at the University of Turku, he was elected an academician of the Academy of Finland, received the EATCS Award in 2004, and was awarded seven honorary degrees including a doctor honoris causa from the University of Western Ontario in 2013; his doctoral students included Juhani Karhumaki, Jarkko Kari and Lila Kari.
