Viktor Mikhailovich Glushkov (August 24, 1923 to January 30, 1982) was a Soviet mathematician and computer scientist regarded as the founding father of information technology in the Soviet Union. He made foundational contributions to automata theory and applied it directly to computer design, and published nearly eight hundred works spanning theoretical computer science, programming theory and artificial intelligence over his career. In 1962 he founded the Institute of Cybernetics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR in Kyiv, later renamed in his honor, and he also established chairs in theoretical cybernetics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1967 and at Kiev State University in 1969.
