Rusins Martins Freivalds was a Latvian computer scientist born in 1942 in German-occupied Latvia, who spent his career at the University of Latvia during and after the Soviet period. He devised what is known as Freivalds' algorithm, a randomized procedure for checking the correctness of matrix multiplication faster than recomputing the product outright, and is regarded as a founder of ultrametric algorithms. His broader work spanned probabilistic algorithms, inductive inference, and quantum computing, and he studied under Boris Trakhtenbrot. He was a full member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences and a member of Academia Europaea, and died in Riga in 2016.
