FAQs

What did David Waltz's doctoral dissertation contribute to computer vision?

His dissertation initiated the field of constraint propagation.

Waltz received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972, working in the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory as a student of Marvin Minsky. His dissertation on computer vision initiated the field of constraint propagation, which allowed a computer program to generate a detailed three-dimensional view of an object given a two dimensional drawing with shadows.
