FAQs

Why does the GE-225 matter to the history of programming languages?

Dartmouth developed BASIC on the GE-225 that Spielberg and Propster designed.

The GE-225 was the mainframe that Arnold Spielberg and Charles Propster designed at General Electric in the late 1950s. According to an Associated Press obituary, it was the machine that let computer scientists at Dartmouth College develop the programming language BASIC, which later became important to the rise of personal computers in the 1970s and 1980s.
