How did the model-view-controller pattern get its name?
It began as Model-View-Editor and became Model-View-Controller after discussions with Adele Goldberg.
Trygve Reenskaug worked on the pattern as a visiting scientist at Xerox PARC from 1978 to 1979. He wrote that it was conceived as a general solution to the problem of users controlling a large and complex data set, and that the hardest part was finding good names for the architectural components. The first set of names was Model-View-Editor, in a paper dated 12 May 1979. After long discussions, particularly with Adele Goldberg, he ended with the terms Model-View-Controller in a paper dated 10 December 1979.
