Bashir Rameev

Also Known As Rameyev
Computer Systems Organization

Bashir Iskandarovich Rameev (May 1, 1918 to May 16, 1994) was a Soviet engineer and inventor regarded as one of the founders of Soviet computing. In 1948, together with Isaak Bruk, he filed the first Soviet patent registered for an electronic computer, and he went on to design Strela, the first Soviet computer put into serial production, seven of which were built beginning in 1954; a Strela machine was used to calculate the orbital trajectory for Sputnik, work for which Rameev and his team received the Stalin Prize. Between 1956 and 1969 he designed and oversaw manufacture of fourteen further computers, chiefly the multipurpose Ural series, incorporating stored programs, binary code and semiconductor diode circuits that paralleled von Neumann architecture principles developed independently.

FAQs

How did Bashir Rameev first learn about electronic computers?

Rameev heard of ENIAC on a BBC broadcast and told his director Axel Berg. Berg introduced him to Isaak Bruk and the two filed a Soviet computer design in 1948.

According to the Russian Virtual Computer Museum, Rameev heard a BBC broadcast reporting that the electronic computer ENIAC had been built in the United States. He was then working at the institute of electronics No 108, headed by the academician Axel Berg, and he told Berg about the machine. Berg saw its importance and introduced Rameev to the academician Isaak Bruk, who was already developing analog computing machines. In May 1948 Rameev took a post as a designing engineer in Bruk's laboratory. About four months later the two men submitted the description of what the museum calls the first Soviet project for an automatic digital electronic machine, and they received a Soviet patent for it in December 1948.
