Terry Welch

Theory of Computation

Terry Archer Welch was an American computer scientist, born on 20 January 1939 and died on 22 November 1988. Along with Abraham Lempel and Jacob Ziv he developed the lossless Lempel-Ziv-Welch compression algorithm, known as LZW, which was published in 1984 as an improvement to the LZ78 algorithm that Lempel and Ziv had published in 1978. The method is credited jointly to all three of its creators.
