James Andrew Storer is a professor of computer science at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, whose research centres on data compression. He received his bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer science from Cornell University in 1975 and his master's and doctoral degrees in computer science from Princeton University in 1977 and 1979. He was a member of technical staff at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey, from 1979 to 1981, joined Brandeis in 1981, and chaired its computer science department from 1992 to 2002. His research interests include computer algorithms, data compression and archiving of text, images and video, storage and processing of large data sets, image retrieval, parallel computing and machine learning. He has chaired the IEEE Data Compression Conference since 1991, and his pages describe work on textual substitution methods that replace phrases with pointers to earlier copies. With Thomas Szymanski he created the LZSS compression algorithm in 1982.
