Allen Newell was an American researcher in computer science and cognitive psychology at the RAND Corporation and at Carnegie Mellon University. He, Herbert A. Simon, and Cliff Shaw contributed to the Information Processing Language and two of the earliest AI programs, the Logic Theorist and the General Problem Solver. How did Allen Newell come to work with Herbert Simon?
He met Simon while at Rand, and their talks on modeling human thinking led him to move to Pittsburgh.
Newell was a research scientist at the Rand Corporation from 1950 to 1961. While at Rand he met Herbert A. Simon, then a professor of industrial administration at Carnegie Institute of Technology, now Carnegie Mellon University. Their discussions on how human thinking could be modeled led Newell to go to Pittsburgh so the two could collaborate. He earned a doctorate in industrial administration there in 1957.
