Software And Its Engineering

Edmund M. Clarke was an American computer scientist and professor at Carnegie Mellon University who, in 1981 with his doctoral student E. Allen Emerson, first proposed model checking as a technique for automatically and exhaustively verifying that a finite state hardware or software design meets its specification. Model checking became one of the most widely used formal verification technologies in the hardware and software industries, and Clarke shared the 2007 Turing Award with Emerson and Joseph Sifakis for developing it into a practical tool.

FAQs

How do you tell a model checker what a design should do?

Properties are usually written in a temporal logic, and the checker decides whether the model satisfies a given formula.

A model checker compares a model of a program against a specification, and the specification is usually written in a temporal logic, a kind of specification language for expressing properties. The question is then posed mathematically: given a temporal logic formula and a model with an initial state, decide whether the model satisfies the formula in that state. This is the setting of the model checking work associated with Edmund M. Clarke.
