Mark Weiser was an American computer scientist and chief technology officer at Xerox PARC who in 1988 coined the term ubiquitous computing to describe a future in which computers are woven so thoroughly into everyday objects and environments that people use them without consciously thinking of them as computers at all. As manager of PARCs computer science laboratory he shaped an early and influential research agenda for what is now called pervasive or ambient computing, work that anticipated the world of embedded sensors and networked everyday devices that followed.
