FAQs

How did mathematician Mina Rees help the early computing field?

She directed the Office of Naval Research mathematics section and used Navy resources to support early computing.

Mina Rees was a mathematician who directed the mathematical section of the Office of Naval Research. In the 1950s she used Navy resources to support the fledgling computing community, which makes her a funder and organizer of computing research rather than a builder of machines. She held a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Chicago, awarded in 1931.
