Elizabeth Cuthill

Theory of Computation

Elizabeth Hahnemann Cuthill was an American applied mathematician and numerical analyst, born on 16 October 1923 and died on 11 January 2011, known for her work on sparse matrix algorithms, on block iterative methods for the numerical approximation of differential equations and on computer simulations of nuclear reactors. She was a researcher for the United States Navy at the David Taylor Model Basin. The Cuthill-McKee algorithm and its reverse variant, named for her work with James McKee, are heuristics for permuting matrices into forms with small bandwidth.
