Shmuel Winograd

Theory of Computation

Shmuel Winograd (January 4, 1936 to March 25, 2019) was an Israeli-American computer scientist noted for his contributions to computational complexity. He proved several major results on the computational aspects of arithmetic; his contributions include the Coppersmith-Winograd algorithm and a fast Fourier transform algorithm that transforms the FFT into a problem of computing convolutions solvable by another algorithm of his. He studied electrical engineering at MIT, receiving his BS and MS in 1959, and received his PhD from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences at New York University in 1968. He joined the research staff at IBM in 1961, later serving as director of its Mathematical Sciences Department from 1970 to 1974 and again from 1980 to 1994.

FAQs

What did Shmuel Winograd discover about multiplication and addition?

Multiplication can be done faster than addition when numbers are represented correctly.

Winograd developed and proved several theorems giving the minimum amount of work needed to perform addition and multiplication. He also discovered that multiplication can be done faster than addition if the numbers are represented correctly.
